Besiktas 0 Man United 1 Player Ratings

Ben Foster - Did everything he needed to do well. Breathed a sigh of relief when Ozkan’s deflected first-half shot dropped just over, but a thoroughly satisfying evening for the England international.

Gary Neville - A solid run-out for the United skipper who looked sharp throughout. Drew on his vast experience to ensure Ozkan rarely had a look-in down the wing and got forward to support in attack when he could.

Nemanja Vidic - A commanding display from the Serbian who needed to be alert against the lively Holosko particularly after the break.

Jonny Evans - An impressive performance from the young centre-back in place of Rio Ferdinand. Made some important early tackles and blocks under pressure from Nobre. Maturing all the time.

Patrice Evra - Has got to be one of the most intelligent and complete defenders around. Two good feet, strong in the air and adept both in defence and attack – he showed all those qualities against the Turks. Made an excellent block from Holosko late on.

Antonio Valencia - Always posed a threat down the right showing good strength and pace to regularly get past Uzulmez who struggled to cope, especially in the opening period. Went close to opening his Reds account with a low second-half drive.
Michael Carrick - The England midfielder went about his job in his usual calm and collected manner. Tracked back well when he needed to and was unlucky to

see a flicked first-half effort fly just wide after a cross from Evra.

Paul Scholes - With a one-match ban looming after his sending off at Spurs, Scholesy signed off in style by heading in the winner.

Anderson - Full of running and enthusiasm and some incisive passing. Set Valencia away brilliantly in the second half with the Ecuadorian just dragging his low shot wide.

Nani - Produced flashes of excitement and quality, but the final ball was sometimes a disappointment. Played his part in the Reds’ winner with a venomous shot which proved too hot for Arikan to handle allowing Scholes to nod home.

Wayne Rooney - Worked tirelessly up front on his own and kept the Besiktas defenders on their toes, but didn’t always get the service he thrives on.

Substitutes

Michael Owen (for Rooney, 63 minutes) - Looked the most likely to profit from Valencia's wing play but had his best chance when fed by Berbatov in the dying moments, striking a low shot just wide.

Dimitar Berbatov (for Carrick, 63 minutes) - Helped present a different challenge to the Besiktas defence after coming on in tandem with Owen.

Ji-sung Park (for Valencia, 84 minutes) - No time to make an impact.
